Vitamin C dosage and the best designed formulations

Everybody needs a well thought out vitamin C dosage strategy for peak health. Don’t take a random quantity from a random product. 

There is no need to pay up to double the cost for timed release, buffered, or added bioflavonoids because regular vitamin C is highly effective at raising blood serum levels. There is no evidence that I have seen that justify their inclusion. Indeed they just introduce another compound that might cause sensitivity. The jury is still out with respect to Liposomal Vitamin C, however any bioavailability advantage is likely marginal to nonexistent. Bioavailability when it comes to vitamin C is just not an issue, therefore I recommend to keep it simple and go with a pure form of Vitamin C.

The ideal dose is 500mg up to twice a day, above this would exceed what you would ever naturally consume in your diet. Amounts more than 1 gram are only required if the body is in acute stress and should only be considered as a temporary measure. Taking 2 tablets per day also helps you to space out digestion and maximize absorption. The number of tablets should not exceed 250 per batch, this should easily last you 6 months and will avoid your vitamin C from festering on your shelf. Remember that tablets are exposed to humidity in the air each time you open the bottle. As ever try to steer clear of oil based softgels as these are the most unstable form and will go rancid over time. Always choose the tablet form especially with vitamin C. Products containing 90 or less tablets are simply not cost effective, waste packaging, and waste your time with unnecessary reordering.

In order to realize a positive effect you need to give your body time to grow and repair over the course of at least a few months. This is a lifestyle commitment, but the reality is that people tend to slack off taking vitamins or eating well. We need to develop good habits. Luckily there is a very easy fix for this which is to choose chewable tablets. This simple step means that taking a tablet is a pleasure and not a chore, you will not feel like you are pushing uphill after the 3rd month. So in the same way as you need to prepare greens to be enjoyable to consume, so it is important to choose a chewable vitamin C that you will look forward to taking. A small cost saving can be made by opting for plain tablets or dry-capsules but the cost saving averaged over 6 months is irrelevant. Having said that some have made the cut in my comparison test.

2nd      Solgar Vitamin C chewable raspberry/acerola taste 500mg, 90 tablets
